Joel Malave is from New Haven Connecticut and a product of the Major League Barber Academy. His east coast roots have made him a hard core Boston Red Sox fan but other than that he has fit in perfectly with the Austin scene and especially here at South Austin Barber Shop. Participating in organized baseball in his youth, he now plays softball allowing him the chance to stay on the field doing something he really enjoys. You will also catch him at the lake or letting his dog take him for a walk. The barbering profession tops the list of things Joel is passionate about in life. Steven Johnson grew up in Syracuse, New York and got to Texas as soon as he could in 2012. He is another fine product of the BeVelle Barber School right here in Austin that continues to turn out top notch talent year after year. Being a barber is always an adrenaline rush for Steven as he never tires of the satisfaction that delivering the goods on whatever hairstyle his client has requested. His arsenal of hairstyles is very diverse whether it is a fade, long hair, design, gentlemen cut, hot lather shave or anything in between, Steven enjoys and excels at them all. You may even find him in a barbershop on his days off just hanging out. Barber Shops and Steven are just a natural fit. Moses Ferndandez (Moe) is an Austin product who fell in love with the barbering industry. Memories of conversations, laughter, and the environment, right down to the unique smells of a barbershop drew him in. With a lot of hands on experience cutting hair already, Moe made it official when he graduated from BeVelle Barber School. Moe enjoys a challenge and loves ALL styles and types of hair. He’ll listen to what the client wants, take what the client gives him, and in a lot of cases, add his own flavor to the cut which he considers an art form. Moe is a culture fanatic and loves trying new foods, visiting new places, and has plans of taking mission trips around the world. Family and church is at the top of the list when it comes to how he spends his time. You can also catch him in the gym and playing basketball. Moe has a love affair with hair, plain and simple. Matt knew at a young age that he wanted to be a professional barber. He would do edge ups, haircuts and even fades for family members. The more positive feedback he got the more he truly believed he would someday be cutting hair for a living. That vision became a reality when Matt graduated from BeVelle Barber School right here in Austin. Matt believes that being a barber allows him a platform for great interpersonal conversations along with being able to give the gift of confidence that comes with a fresh haircut. A personal favorite haircut of his is the fade and design work. Much of Matt's free time is spent enjoying the outdoors and traveling with his wife and two daughters.
Daniel Cassadas is a Southern California native, in fact, he’s a tribal member of the Juañeno Band of Mission Indians. Though a transplant, today, he couldn’t be more proud to call Austin, Texas, his home. Daniel started cutting hair at the age of 14, but what began as a 20 year hobby, has transformed into a thriving professional career. Daniel has an appreciation for the barbering craft and the vulnerability between client and barber, including the relationships it creates. He values the ancient history and traditions of the barbershop, and the future it holds. Outside of the barbershop, you can find Daniel enjoying his family, and friends; while relishing the outdoors, music, film, art, and sports. He is most proud of his faith and relationship with God and Jesus Christ. Daniel’s favorite service to perform is a classic straight razor shave with hot and cold towels. Jeremy (Jay) Ayers started cutting at the tender young age of 16 and knew right away which direction he would be putting his efforts in towards a career. Born In Austin TX and raised in Abilene, TX where he attended and graduated from NeeCee’s Barber College. Returning to his original roots in Austin, we feel fortunate to call Jay one of our own here at South Austin Barber Shop. Jay is extremely comfortable behind the chair and particularly likes to perform any kind of fade style haircut. Jay loves being a barber because it gives him the opportunity to help men look and feel their best day in and day out. Ramon Tavarez Jr. (Kiko) is a product of Success School LLC Barber College in downtown Chicago. There are some barbers who are what we call a "natural" - Kiko is a prime example. With four years of professional barbering experience, he could easily be mistaken for someone with many many more. No career compares to being a barber in Kiko's mind. Robert Dorantes is a native Texan and graduate of Modern Barber College in Houston. It will be clear right from the start you are in good hands as Robert's intuition makes him quick to understand your intended look. Robert specializes in the businessman's cut and is right out front when it comes to all the latest styles and trends. Please note that Robert hasn't ever gotten around to gaining experience with textured hair such as African Americans have. In addition to being a highly skilled Master Barber, Robert has a passion for music and is the leader of a three-time Grammy nominated band. Family comes first with Robert and that is where most of his time is spent when the clippers aren't running or the trumpet isn't playing. As a young man, he was off to an impressive start as he achieved the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout.
